The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) are statewide assessments designed to measure how well students are meeting the grade-level New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). Beginning in 2026, the NJSLA English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics assessments transitioned to a computer-adaptive format, known as the NJSLA-A. The NJSLA-Science (NJSLA-S) remains a fixed-form assessment.

The NJSLA-A ELA assessment measures students' knowledge and skills in the grade-level New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts. The assessment includes reading and writing components and measures students' ability to understand and analyze texts, demonstrate knowledge of language and vocabulary, and communicate effectively through writing.

The NJSLA-A Mathematics assessment measures students' knowledge and skills in the grade-level New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics. The assessment addresses grade- or course-level mathematical content as well as students' ability to reason, model, and apply mathematical concepts.

The NJSLA-S measures students' knowledge and skills in science according to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science. The assessment emphasizes the application of scientific knowledge and practices, including students' ability to make sense of scientific phenomena and demonstrate scientific and engineering practices. It addresses the domains of Earth and space science, life science, and physical science.

Students in grades 3-8 participate in the NJSlA-A assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Students in grades 5 and 8 participate in the NJSLA-S Science assessment.

The NJSLA assessments are administered annually in the spring, with specific testing dates determined by the school.
